PPANM Explores Canyon de Chelly and Shiprock


Friday, October 26 to Sunday October 28

Join PPA of New Mexico and hosts, Mickey Ginn and Dennis Chamberlain as we take you on a special tour of Canyon de Chelly and Shiprock. This tour will feature a Native American tour guide of the Canyon for the afternoon and early evening of Saturday, October 27.   We will also have a special presentation about legendary Old West photographer Edward Curtis by his great grandson, John Graybill.

10/26/18-Fri.

Crew arrives in Farmington in afternoon and settles into hotel.  (Three hotel options of varying price ranges will be provided).

Group dinner and/or night shoot at Shiprock which is 40 miles away.  Sunset is at 6:20.

Anyone not able to spend the night in Farmington can meet the group Saturday noon in Chinle.

10/27/18-Sat.

Up early to photograph Shiprock at sunrise.  Check out and on the road by 6:00am for a 7:30am sunrise.

Then back to the town of Shiprock for a breakfast at McDonalds.

Drive to Chinle (2 hr/120 miles via hwys 64 & 191) and check into hotel (group rate of $76, , individually made reservations)

1 pm presentation at hotel by John Graybill, the great grandson of Edward Curtis, on the subject of Curtis’ historic sepia photography of the American Indian.    One of Curtis’ most famous photographs is that of the horse riders at the bottom of Canyon de Chelly.

3:30pm jeep tour (3 hr)  of Canyon de Chelly by tour guides (in their vehicles).  Departure from and return to the hotel.

10/28/18-Sun.

Group rises early and eats, checks out.  Sunrise photography on canyon rim, followed by hike into the canyon to Whitehouse Ruins. Trail is well maintained.  Round trip is 2.7 miles with elevation change of 680′.

Those who want to return to Farmington will take the very scenic back road thru Red Vallley to photograph Shiprock at sunset.

Same accommodation arrangement as Friday.

Members of the group with other commitments can depart at any time

OR anyone wanting to stay at Canyon de Chelley for another evening and morning is free to do so.

Costs:

Price for the tour is $159 which includes $58 for the tour guides and park entrance fee for Saturday and includes a special presentation by John Graybill, the great-grandson of famous old west photographer Edward Curtis

Friday night you will have a choice of hotels in reasonable price ranges in Farmington.   For Saturday, we have a special group rate for the Chinle Arizona Holiday Inn of $76.
